Whakaki Resilience Group
To Respond • Recover • Review • Be Ready
Building strength through community resilience in Whakaki.
What are we about
Our Mission Statement:
To Respond, Recover, Review and Be Ready
Our Mission
To protect and strengthen the people of Whakakī by preparing for emergencies, responding together when they occur, supporting recovery, and learning from each event so our community is always better prepared for what comes next.
Community First
Whakakī Resilience Group is a whānau-led initiative. We act as caretakers (Ahi Kā) for our village, using local knowledge, strong relationships, and practical planning to look after our people when it matters most.
What we do
Supporting Whakāki whānau with practical emergency readiness and response.
Response & Coordination
During emergencies, we activate locally, open our community hubs where necessary and support welfare needs, share information, and coordinate with councils, Civil Defence, and neighbouring communities using the CIMS framework.
Preparedness
We work with whānau to prepare for storms, flooding, earthquakes, and tsunami by encouraging emergency planning, clear evacuation points, communication readiness, and local resource coordination.
When It Counts
Cyclone Gabrielle Response
This picture shows Wairoa Township and the reason people from outside of Wairoa could not get in to town.
This picture shows the flooding at Robert and Diane Walkers property at the North Eastern end of the Whakaki Village
Whakakī Resilience Group stood up just days before Cyclone Gabrielle. Working alongside whānau, the Whakakī Lake Trust and the Whakaki Marae, we opened the lake, opened the marae as a welfare hub, secured communications, and supported our people while the wider district was cut off.
